The Literaturforum im Brecht-Haus is located in 125 Chausseestraße, the building where Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel lived and worked during the last period of their lives. The house is situated in the central area of the City of Berlin.
In this same house Brecht’s historical working and living room open to visit can be found as well as the Bertolt Brecht archive; both of them are establishments of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin (Academy of the Arts).
The Literaturforum is a meeting place for those who are interested in literature, theater, history and politics. Since 1992 the Literaturforum has assumed as his duty the initiation of a critical debate about the societal function of art and culture. Moreover the literary institution offers a forum for contemporary literature focused on past or present-day cleavages, which brings itself into contention with other arts.
We augment the critique discourse following the sense of Bertolt Brecht´s tradition. Writers and their activities as well as academic works concerning literature, culture, society and politics lie in the centre of our focus.
Literary, historical, contemporary and politically-oriented exhibitions constitute benchmarks in our program. New publications are presented and zeitgeist related questions are posed through public discussions with the authors, critics, scientists, journalists and artists.
Several times a year we take care of dedicating meetings and publications to different literary thematic complexes. Life and letters of Brecht and his partner are also a stable component of our program.
Among the guests invited in the most recent years are: Volker Braun, Jonathan Franzen, Herta Müller, Christoph Hein, Sibylle Lewitscharoff, Josef Bierbichler and Christa Wolf.
